On this page we will look at the Objects toolbar (found usually on the left-hand side) features.

Pointer Tool: This button selects the . This button is used to Select, Move, Resize objects etc.

If for example, you click the line tool button (see 4) by mistake and you wanted to move a box instead you:

a) Select this pointer tool button,

b) Left click and hold down the mouse button and move the mouse, let go of left mouse when box is in the right place.


Text Frame Tool: This button is used to create a textbox. Click on this button, move the mouse to the blank page. When the mouse pointer changes to a cross then draw a rectangle by holding the left mouse button. Release the mouse when the box is the correct size. Now simply type in your text.


Table Frame Tool: This button is used to create a table. When you click on the button your mouse arrow will change into a cross.

a) To create a table, click on the Table Frame Tool button.

b) When the mouse changes to a cross, draw a rectangle where you would like to place the table. (A window appears. Figure P4)

c) Now click in the box Number of Rows and type in the number of rows needed. Click in Number of Columns and type in the number of Columns. (Indicated by arrows 1)

d) Then click OK (arrow 2)

e) Now looking at the picture below, click on the grey square at the top left of the table which has now appeared (indicated by arrow 3)

f) Click the right mouse on the area, which has changed black. (arrow 4) A menu will appear.

g) Hover you mouse pointer over ‘Change Table’. (arrow 5)

h) Hover you mouse pointer over ‘Line/Border Style’. (arrow 6)

i) Then click on the option ‘More Styles’ on the menu. (arrow 7) A window will appear.

j) Looking at picture P5 below, you will notice that there are various different border options. In this example click on the button labelled ‘Grid’ (indicated by arrow 1)

k) Now click on OK (arrow 2). Next click on one of the empty cells and type in your data.


WordArt Frame Tool: This button insert WordArt into your publication.

a) First click on the WordArt Frame Tool button

b) Draw a box where you want the WordArt to be placed (after your mouse pointer changes to a cross).

c) Now type your text into the ‘Enter Your Text Here’ box. Then click update display. (Look at the picture below.)


Picture Frame Tool: Inserts an external / outside picture from file on floppy disk or Hard Disk.

Draw a rectangle and select the picture to import.


Clip Gallery Tool: This object inserts a ClipArt object.

Line Tool: This button draws a line. Simply click the left mouse on the blank page (when mouse pointer changes to a cross) and draw the line. Use Shift while drawing the mouse to make or Line straight unless snap to grid is enabled.

If the line is the wrong size then resize it by clicking on one of the small black squares when the mouse changes to:-


Oval Tool: This button inserts an Ellipse/Circle. The same principle applies as the Line Tool.

If you would like a perfect circle – hold down shift as you draw it.


Rectangle Tool: This button draws a rectangle. The same principle applies as the Line Tool.

To draw a perfect square hold down shift.


Custom Shapes: This button inserts a different shaped boxes. Click this button and select one of the shapes from the window.

Now the rest is the same as the Line Tool.


Design Gallery Object: This button will bring up the Design Gallery.

This will show you various types of templates. Click on the design you would like to use then click on ‘insert object.’ If you would like a different design then click on the wand icon .
